Cave Takes Overall Lead As Vatanen Climbs To Third

At the end of Saturday’s morning action, Tom Cave moved into the overall lead with Marius Aasen of Norway following just 6.3 seconds back. Max Vatanen of Finland moved up to third after setting a quickest time through SS11.

Cave opened the day setting a fastest time on SS10 followed closely by Vatanen just under a second back and Aasen in 4.8 seconds.

Vatanen struck back by winning the second stage of the morning, leading Aasen by 0.8sec.  Cave was close behind finishing just 0.2sec behind Aasen. Mats van den Brand falls off the pace finishing fifth, making room for Vatanen to move into third overall. Trophy new-comer and novice driver Gus Greensmith finished fourth; an impressive feat considering his want of experience on WRC rounds.

Nil Solans blasted through the 12th and 13th stages setting two consecutive fastest times, taking his event total to four.

On the 12th stage Aasen was forced to ease of the pace after he suspected a puncture. However it at the time control it transpired to excess gravel in the rear rims due to protection damage.

Going into the afternoon’s action Cave aims to maintain his position and Aasen will hope he can close the gap.

Tom Cave said: “It’s been a perfect morning for us really. I feel I drove well and followed the notes which seem to be working. The car is perfect and I’m having fun. I’ll be pushing hard this afternoon, seeing what Aasen has got.”

Marius Aasen said: “Things are going well for us, apart from the issues we had on SS12 we’ve had no problems. There is still a lot of work to be done but I’m looking forward to the afternoon.”

Max Vatanen said: “I’m trying the best I can here but I can’t seem to get the times I want. The left front wheel is bent and it’s taking some pace out of my driving. I’m not too happy with my position but I will try and maintain the podium and get some stage wins.”
